Bumper-to-Bumper Warranty: What It Covers and What It Does Not
A bumper-to-bumper warranty covers nearly everything on your vehicle - but "nearly" matters. Here is exactly what is covered, what is excluded, how factory coverage compares by brand, and how to extend it after expiration.

How bumper-to-bumper works:
Bumper-to-bumper (exclusionary) policies list what is NOT covered. Everything else is covered by default. This is different from a powertrain or mid-tier plan that lists specific covered components. Exclusionary coverage is the broadest type available.
What Bumper-to-Bumper Does NOT Cover
| Excluded Item | Why It Is Excluded |
|---|---|
| Brake pads and rotors | Wear items - consumed through normal use |
| Tires | Covered by separate tire manufacturer warranty |
| Oil, filters, fluids | Maintenance items |
| Wiper blades | Wear items |
| Light bulbs (most plans) | Maintenance / wear |
| Catalytic converter (VSC plans) | Emissions component - excluded by most third-party plans |
| Battery (after 2 years) | Factory warranty covers year 1-2; excluded after |
| Clutch friction material | Normal wear on manual transmissions |
| Paint, upholstery, trim | Cosmetic - not mechanical failure |
| Rust (surface - not perforation) | Surface rust is not a mechanical failure |
Does extended warranty cover catalytic converters?
The factory bumper-to-bumper warranty covers your catalytic converter for 3 years/36,000 miles. Federal emissions warranty law extends catalytic converter coverage to 8 years / 80,000 miles on all new vehicles sold in the US, regardless of the bumper-to-bumper term.
After the factory warranty, most third-party extended warranty plans do not cover catalytic converters. Endurance, CarShield, CARCHEX, and most other VSC providers explicitly exclude emissions components including the catalytic converter. This is an important gap for Toyota Prius, Tacoma, and 4Runner owners who are high catalytic converter theft targets - VSC plans do not cover theft either (that is comprehensive auto insurance).
Takeaway: for catalytic converter protection after 80,000 miles, your auto insurance (comprehensive coverage) is your best option for theft. Mechanical failure protection comes from the extended warranty only if your specific plan covers it - verify before purchasing.
Aftermarket Exhaust and Warranty - What the Law Says
Under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, a manufacturer cannot void your entire warranty simply because you installed an aftermarket part. They must demonstrate that the aftermarket part caused the specific failure you are claiming.
Modifications that rarely cause issues
- ✓ Cat-back exhaust systems (after the catalytic converter)
- ✓ Cosmetic exhaust tips
- ✓ Cold air intakes (in most cases)
Modifications that create risk
- ✗ Removing or gutting catalytic converters
- ✗ Aftermarket downpipes that bypass emissions controls
- ✗ Engine tune/flash that alters factory emissions calibration
