Extended Warranty Refund: How to Cancel and Get Your Money Back
Almost all extended warranties are cancellable and refundable. Here is exactly how the refund works, how it is calculated, the steps to request it, and what to do if a dealer pushes back.
Your Rights: Extended Warranty Refund Rules
30-Day Full Refund
Most contracts give you 30 days from purchase to cancel for a 100% refund, no questions asked.
Prorated After 30 Days
After the free-look period, you receive a prorated refund based on unused time or mileage remaining.
State Law Protects You
VSC cancellation rights are governed by state law. A dealer cannot legally deny a valid cancellation request.
How Extended Warranty Refunds Are Calculated
Prorated Refund Formula
Example:
- - Paid: $3,000 for a 48-month / 60,000-mile plan
- - Cancel at: month 18, 25,000 miles used
- - Time remaining: 30 months (63%)
- - Mileage remaining: 35,000 miles (58%)
- - Contract uses lesser of time or mileage: 58%
- - Cancellation fee: $75
- - Refund: ($3,000 x 58%) - $75 = $1,665
Contracts vary - some use time only, some use mileage only, and some use the lesser of both. Check your specific contract's cancellation section for the exact formula.
Refund Value by When You Cancel
| When You Cancel | Refund Type | What to Expect |
|---|---|---|
| Days 1-30 | Full refund period (free-look) | Cancel anytime for a 100% refund. No questions asked, no fees at most providers. |
| Days 31-90 | Early prorated refund | Prorated refund minus cancellation fee. You have used little of the contract so refund is still large. |
| Year 1-2 | Prorated refund | Refund based on remaining time/mileage. Cancellation fee deducted. Still worthwhile if coverage is not needed. |
| Year 3+ | Smaller prorated refund | Less contract remains so refund is smaller. Evaluate whether refund covers remaining need. |
| After major claim | Reduced or no refund | Some contracts reduce refund by claim amounts paid. Check your contract for claim offset language. |
How to Cancel an Extended Warranty - Step by Step
Locate your contract
Find your original vehicle service contract document. You need the contract number, administrator name, and cancellation address.
Write a cancellation request
Put it in writing. Include: your name, contract number, VIN, purchase date, reason for cancellation, and requested refund method.
Send to the administrator, not the dealer
The refund comes from the contract administrator, not the dealership. Send your cancellation to the administrator's address listed in the contract.
Send certified mail or email with confirmation
You need proof of the cancellation date. Certified mail or email with read receipt establishes when the cancellation was received.
Follow up in 30 days
If you have not heard back in 30 days, call and follow up in writing. Refunds legally must be processed within 30-60 days in most states.
Escalate if needed
If the refund is denied or delayed: file with your state's Department of Insurance or Consumer Protection. Most issues resolve at this step.
If the Dealer Refuses Your Refund Request
You have legal options
Contact the administrator directly - not the dealer. The contract administrator (Endurance, Mechanical Protection Inc., etc.) is obligated to process cancellations regardless of what the dealer says.
File with your state's Department of Insurance - VSCs are regulated financial products. A complaint triggers an investigation that dealers take seriously.
Dispute the charge with your credit card - if you paid by card and the refund is denied, a chargeback may be appropriate if the provider is violating the contract terms.
File with the FTC and your state AG - refund denial on a valid cancellation is a consumer protection violation in most states.
Thinking About a Replacement Warranty?
If you are cancelling a dealer-sold warranty because of high cost or poor coverage, third-party providers typically offer the same or better coverage for 20-40% less. Compare quotes before deciding to go without any coverage.
