Is a Fuel Pump Covered Under Extended Warranty?
Fuel pump replacement costs $400–$900. Fuel injector failure can run $2,000 for a full set. Mid-tier and exclusionary plans cover both - here's exactly what's included.
Fuel System Coverage by Plan Tier
Powertrain only
Some plans include the fuel pump (because it powers the engine), but fuel injectors and the fuel module are typically excluded.
Mid-Tier / Enhanced
Covers fuel pump, injectors, pressure regulator, pump relay, and pump control module.
Exclusionary / Comprehensive
All fuel system components covered except filter (maintenance) and physical damage.
Fuel System Components - Covered vs. Excluded
| Component | Covered? |
|---|---|
| Electric fuel pump (in-tank) | Varies |
| Fuel injectors | Varies |
| Fuel pressure regulator | Yes |
| Fuel pump relay | Yes |
| Fuel pump control module | Yes |
| Neutral safety switch | Yes |
| Fuel filter replacement | No |
| Fuel tank (physical damage) | No |
| Fuel lines (corrosion damage) | No |
| Carbon buildup cleaning (GDI) | No |
Fuel Pump Repair Costs
$400–$900
Fuel pump replacement - most domestic vehicles
$600–$1,400
Fuel pump - trucks, SUVs, and European vehicles
$800–$2,000
Full fuel injector set replacement (GDI engines)
Fuel pump labor costs are high because most modern pumps are located inside the fuel tank - requiring tank removal to access. Labor alone often runs $200–$400 for the pump swap, regardless of parts cost.
Neutral Safety Switch: Covered and Where It Lives
The neutral safety switch prevents the engine from starting in any gear other than Park or Neutral - a critical safety component. When it fails, the car either won't start at all, or won't recognize the gear position and starts unexpectedly.
Where It's Located
Mounted on the side of the automatic transmission housing, near the gear selector linkage. On newer vehicles it is integrated into the transmission range sensor (PRNDL switch). Diagnosis requires the car to be raised - access is not straightforward.
Is It Covered?
Yes - the neutral safety switch is covered under mid-tier and exclusionary plans as an electrical or drivetrain-electrical component. Replacement cost: $150–$400. Because of its transmission-adjacent location, it is often included even in powertrain plans that cover transmission electrical components.
Warning Signs: Get Coverage Before These Appear
Pre-existing conditions are excluded from all plans
If your car is already showing these symptoms, coverage purchased today will not cover those specific failures. Get covered while everything is working normally:
- ⚠Engine sputtering or stuttering at highway speeds
- ⚠Hard starts, especially when the engine is hot
- ⚠Sudden power loss under acceleration
- ⚠Whining noise from the fuel tank area
- ⚠Engine stalling without warning
