The 5.3L V8 DFM system is the most concerning powertrain concern as it shares heritage with the AFM lifter failure documented on 2014-2021 models.

The 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 with the 3.0L Duramax inline-6 diesel has reported: diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) injection system faults, diesel particulate filter (DPF) regeneration issues (especially on short-trip driving patterns), glow plug failures, fuel injector carbon deposits, and occasional EGR valve malfunctions. The 3.0L Duramax is generally a well-engineered diesel but requires diesel-specific maintenance and is sensitive to short-trip driving that prevents full DPF regeneration.

Common 2023 GMC Yukon problems include: air ride suspension compressor failures (on models with magnetic ride control or air suspension), infotainment and connectivity system bugs, transmission shudder on the 10-speed automatic, DFM lifter ticking on 5.3L and 6.2L engines, and rear differential seal leaks. For GMC Sierra 1500 with a 5.3L or 6.2L V8, at minimum a powertrain plan to cover the DFM/AFM lifter failure risk is recommended. A mid-tier plan that adds electrical coverage is better for 2019+ models with complex infotainment and sensor systems.
