Car Repair Insurance: What Covers Mechanical Breakdowns?
Standard auto insurance does not cover engine or transmission failures. The product that does is called a vehicle service contract - here is how it works, what it costs, and how to find the best plan.

Standard auto insurance - liability, collision, comprehensive - does not cover mechanical failure. If your engine throws a rod, your transmission slips, or your AC compressor dies, that bill comes entirely out of pocket unless you have separate mechanical repair coverage.
What standard auto insurance covers
- ✓ Collision damage from accidents
- ✓ Comprehensive (theft, weather, fire)
- ✓ Liability for damage you cause
- ✓ Medical payments after accident
- ✗ Engine or transmission failure
- ✗ Electrical system breakdowns
- ✗ AC compressor or cooling failures
- ✗ Normal mechanical wear
What a vehicle service contract covers
- ✓ Engine internal components
- ✓ Transmission and drive axles
- ✓ Electrical systems (top plans)
- ✓ AC and cooling systems
- ✓ Fuel and steering systems
- ✓ Roadside assistance (most plans)
Types of Mechanical Repair Coverage
There are two products that provide car repair coverage. Most drivers will qualify for a vehicle service contract.
Vehicle Service Contract (Extended Warranty)
A paid service contract from a third-party provider or dealer that covers mechanical failures after the manufacturer warranty expires. Available for most vehicles regardless of age or mileage. Costs $75–$220/month depending on vehicle and plan tier.
Mechanical Breakdown Insurance (MBI)
A true insurance product offered by select insurers (most notably GEICO) that functions similarly to an extended warranty. Generally limited to vehicles under 15 months old and 15,000 miles. Often cheaper than VSCs for qualifying vehicles.
